Dog spotted at top of Egypt's 448ft ancient pyramid trending on social media
Ahram Online , Saturday 19 Oct 2024
A stray dog that was spotted on top of the 448-foot-tall (136-metre) Pyramid of Khafre in Giza has been trending on social media over the past few days.
The impressive scene – which amassed millions of views – was captured by paraglider Marshall Mosher and his fellow paragliders while flying over Egypt's Great Pyramids at sunrise this week.
Mosher, who posted the video on Instagram on Monday, said the dog was exuberantly pursuing birds from an impressive altitude of 448 feet above the ancient structures.
At first, Mosher erroneously stated that the dog had ascended the iconic Great Pyramid of Giza, but he later clarified that it was actually the Pyramid of Khafre—slightly shorter yet still a breathtaking landmark.
Social media users celebrated the thrilling clip, expressing their astonishment at the dog's ascent of the pyramid, as the Egyptian government doesn't allow visitors to climb any of its ancient pyramids due to preservation and safety concerns.
Many users left several jokes in the comment section. "Probably just chilling," one Instagram user said.
However, numerous animal enthusiasts expressed their worries, fearing the dog might be stuck atop the pyramid. "How anyone finding this to be funny is beyond me !!," one Instagram user said, while another one added: "I wonder how long it took him. I want him to come down and get some water."
To see if the dog was still there, Mosher and his fellow flew over the pyramid again, with no luck.
However, Mosher shared good news the following day, thrilling the viewers of a video of what appeared to be the same dog safely making its way down the pyramid.
Mosher regularly paraglides over the Great Pyramids of Giza as part of an annual event hosted by @skyone.egy, which brings together some of the best pilots from around the world to share the magic of paramotoring over the pyramids with the world.
"I can see why the dog wanted to go up there. It's definitely the best view for Cairo street dog that I can think exists," Mosher told CNN.
Egypt is home to 118 pyramids that date back thousands of years. The Pyramids of Giza – built thousands of years back – still attract numerous visitors every year.
Egypt attracted a record-breaking 7.069 million tourists between January and June 2024.
